Intelect Celebrates Newly Qualified Apprentice Rhys During NAW 2026

In celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, Intelect is proud to recognise the outstanding talent we have within the business, and highlight the successful journeys of our apprentices.

One story that demonstrates the success of our apprenticeship programme is Rhys Edwards, a former Mechanical Design Apprentice, who has recently excelled through his apprenticeship whilst studying his HNC.

Rhys achieved his Level 3 qualification in Mechanical Design and has since been promoted to the role of Junior Design Engineer, marking a significant milestone in his career.

We caught up with Rhys to reflect on his apprenticeship experience, how it has supported his professional development, and the benefits apprenticeships can offer to those who are considering this career path.

What do you feel the benefits were of starting an apprenticeship?

“The main benefit was gaining hands-on experience for the role, rather than just learning in a classroom environment. In this type of job, you learn more practically by being surrounded by experienced professionals and being exposed to real-world projects.”

What did you enjoy most about completing an apprenticeship with Intelect?

“The company culture really stood out for me. Everyone in the team was welcoming and supportive from the start. We’ve built strong relationships not just at work, but outside of it too, which makes us feel like a real team.”

What was a stand-out quality in this apprenticeship at Intelect?

“The level of trust Intelect places in its apprentices is incredibly valuable for your learning. You’re given the opportunity to work independently while knowing support is there when you need it. That belief and trust really helps you build confidence and grow professionally.”

What was your favourite project during your apprenticeship?

“My favourite project was working with one of our blue-chip clients. I was involved in modelling services and pipework, which allowed me to apply my skills in a real-world setting. Being challenged in this way pushed me to improve, stay motivated, and continuously develop. I was even able to share with the team the new design skills I’d discovered.”

How did your apprenticeship help prepare you work future work?

“My apprenticeship gave me the technical knowledge I need for my future role. It helped me develop transferable skills that I now use on real-life projects and has given me confidence take on more complex and challenging work.”

What do you hope happens now after your apprenticeship?

“I am currently completing my HNC in Mechanical Engineering which I hope to continue. Looking ahead, I want to progress into higher level education, while also taking on more responsibility and practical challenges within my role at Intelect.”

To recognise Rhys’s hard work and commitment throughout his apprenticeship, he has been shortlisted for Intelect’s ‘Apprentice of the Year’ Award, which will take place Friday 13th February during National Apprenticeship Week.

Rhys’s journey is a fantastic example of how apprenticeships at Intelect empower individuals with practical experience, confidence, and career progression.
