Opening Eyes And Minds Into The World Of Engineering

Engineering Insight Day at Intelect!

During the second day of National Apprenticeship Week 2025, Intelect hosted two site visits for students who are part of the Primary Ambassador Programme at POW.

Over 30 students from seven different primary schools across Teesside were given access to our Middlesbrough facilities, to witness the day-to-day operations of our company.

The aim of the visits was to open the eyes and minds of young people in our local area, informing them of the opportunities available in the engineering industry, and how they can access them in the future.

The tours started with a safety briefing from our business operations manager, Lily Brothwood, to highlight the importance of safety in the working environment. Our mechanical design apprentice, Rhys Edwards, then gave a demonstration of one of our 3D scanners, even allowing the students to have a go too!

Whilst in the workshops, the students were able to watch various machines operating, including our laser cutter and our metal press, expertly carried out by supervisor, Peter O’Brien. Our panel shop manager, Lee Robson, then programmed a push-button game for the students to take part in, ensuring an interactive experience which explained elements of our electrical service offerings in a child-friendly way.

To wrap up the tour, the groups were informed about the various apprenticeships available within the engineering industry, and they even got to take part in a Q&A with Maddie, our health and safety apprentice.

As a little added extra, all of the students who attended the day came away with an Intelect goodie bag, filled with products made by some of our clients who operate in the Food & Beverage manufacturing industry.

On the whole, it was a great opportunity to help raise the aspirations of young people in our area, while showcasing a variety of career opportunities, and we would like to thank everyone involved, including POW and Spark Tees Valley.
