Intelect continues to support the next generation in Grimsby

Intelect’s Grimsby branch has continued to keep its promise when it comes to handing down skills to the next generation, as their latest apprentice passes college with flying colours and takes home coveted award.

Intelect Grimsby

Ben New, fabrication apprentice, is one of the company’s latest rising stars. Completing his first year of training with local engineering college HETA, Ben was recently awarded Apprentice of the Year by the college, after achieving a distinction in each of the ten exams he sat as part of his course.

Ray Johnson, Director of Intelect’s Grimsby branch said, “We’re really proud to see Ben being commended by the college for his hard work and successes. As a company, we’re really keen to ensure that we continue to support the next generation of engineers, so it’s always great when you see talent like Ben coming through.

He continued, “We’re looking forward to supporting Ben in the next stage of his apprenticeship, where he will now spend three years in our workshop gaining valuable hands on, industry experience.”

As a celebration of his success, the Director’s at Intelect presented Ben with a £200 tool voucher, helping him to kick start his tool kit prior to his transition into the workshop. At the presentation, they were also joined by former Director and grandfather of Ben, Phill Bodsworth, who was a driver of the business’s skills pledge back in 2011.

Phill said, “It was great to be able to come back to Intelect today to mark Ben’s achievements. To keep the family ties going within the business is great to see, and it’s encouraging to know that the company is still investing so much in the next generation of engineers.”

Intelect currently employs five apprentices, with two recently qualifying this year, and is it clear that they have remained committed when it comes to supporting the young people of Grimsby into meaningful career paths.

Just Jane Lancaster Bomber

The Lancaster bomber ‘Just Jane’ is based at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby. During the Summer months visitors can take a ‘taxi’ ride around the airfield in the bomber, however the end goal is to restore Just Jane to airworthy condition again.

They are now three years into a ten year restoration project to get a certificate of airworthiness from the Civil aviation authority, which will allow Just Jane to return to flight and become the only the third flying Lancaster in the world.

Part of this winter’s work is to remove the rear fuselage and thoroughly inspect the condition of all the ribs. It will soon be re-assembled to the rest of the aircraft for this summer’s taxy run season, then next winter it will be returned to the jig to have any corroded ribs replaced and all the aluminium skin replaced.

Intelect Engineering in Grimsby were asked to design and build a combined lifting frame and jig to lift the rear fuselage section off its temporary trolley and fix it in a position so it could be worked on safely. There are multiple support beams at each end to allow beams to be removed as required to allow access to all the fuselage and it still be supported. Any removed members must go back in exactly the same position.

Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage are hoping to be open this summer (COVID-19 permitting) to offer a 'tail down taxy ride' on the world famous Lancaster Bomber - the only place in Europe you can get on board the iconic aircraft!

Intelect brings new jobs and investment to Grimsby

Grimsby engineers

One of the North’s fastest growing mechanical engineering and electrical firms has launched a new division based at Grimsby.

Intelect Engineering has occupied an 8,000 sq. ft. former BT workshop and office complex on the South Humberside Industrial Estate and in so doing has already created 20 new jobs with more to follow in the next few months.

The expansion into the Humber region by the parent group, Middlesbrough-based Intelect UK, has been backed by an investment of around £1m and will be welcomed as a rare piece of good news for the South Bank economy.

The group is in the process of completing a £4m-plus five-year expansion programme at its Riverside Park, Middlesbrough, headquarters, where the workforce has grown quickly in recent years to its current total of more than 100.

A recent recruitment campaign attracted almost 500 applications, mostly from people working in the engineering sector in North East Lincolnshire.

Director Phill Bodsworth, self-confessed "Grimsby through and through", said: “Intelect is one of the most progressive companies in the electrical and mechanical engineering sector and it sees the Humber region, especially the South Bank, as an area of opportunity.

"Much of our work will be concentrated on serving the food processing and manufacturing industry, both locally and further afield, and with that in mind we have hand-picked a number of applicants with impressive levels of knowledge and experience gained from working in that sector. Some of them have more than 25 years experience in the industry.

"We will also be working with the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, both very important to the economy of North East Lincolnshire, and we hope that by putting together a team of people who have top quality skills, lots of experience and local knowledge we can provide a valuable service to other local businesses without them having to look outside this region.

“North East Lincolnshire has had its fair share of knocks in recent months but we hope Intelect’s investment and job creation will go some way to reversing this trend. Certainly, we plan to move forward at pace with this new division, creating new jobs as we go. We have already created 20 jobs and we expect this number to double before the end of the year.”
