NWG Murton WTW Upgrade

Client: MM Bentley
Date: Aug ‘19 – Jun ’20
Discipline: Electrical Installation

Works included:

  • Installation of cable containment around the perimeter of the treatment hall building
  • High bay lighting.
  • Process plant and equipment installation of cabling and terminations.
  • Waste Water & Contact Tanks,
  • De-Chlorination System
  • External lighting.

In November 2017 Intelect UK Ltd were chosen by MM Bentley as a key electrical installation supplier for a proposed upgrade of an existing borehole water treatment plant at Murton Berwick Upon Tweed. A new water treatment works consisting of pressure filters and chemical dosing was to be constructed off line alongside the existing works and required to be operational by late 2020. Given the relatively short timeframe Intelect were invited to a ‘Design Sprint’ at the Seaham hub where other key suppliers worked collaboratively to formulate an outline design to which prices could be calculated formulating a target overall costs for the scheme. Over the following 14 months MMB designers in Cambridge produced an electrical installation scope and drawing package, this package was received by Intelect for final pricing and an NEC3 Option C design & construct contact was awarded a short time later.

Prior to commencement of site works detailed electrical termination and loop drawings were prepared by Jamie Colledge, these drawings were reviewed and signed off by the clients appointed electrical engineer Dave Bell. Dane Steel was handed the responsibility of supervising the site works and a small team of electricians were assigned to the project with Andy Rudd being in overall charge.

Site installation began in August 2019 with the first activity being the installation of cable containment around the perimeter of the treatment hall building and high bay lighting. Process plant and equipment soon followed opening the way for the installation of cabling and terminations. Before and after pictures of the first stage of works.

Work progressed through the remainder of the year within the treatment hall building and come the Christmas shutdown we were ready to move across to the adjacent High Lift Pumping Station. Between January and March the electrical work within the pumping station was completed enabling the MMB commissioning team to start their testing. It was towards the end of this period that the COVID-19 Pandemic arrived in the UK which had a dramatic effect on the day-to-day progress on not just this project but all other works within Intelect. After a temporary suspension of site works Dane and his team returned to site to see out the remainder of the internal installation works.

At the start of spring our attention turned to field equipment located external to the treatment hall and pumping station, these works included the Waste Water & Contact Tanks, De-Chlorination System and external lighting. Local containment and isolators were mounted then cables we installed through underground ducts, terminations were completed by late May leaving only the external lighting left to essentially complete our works. During the early part of this period we were still working under lockdown conditions but as restrictions started to ease the site team were again able to book into local overnight accommodation allowing for more efficient working and less miles on the road. External lighting and final snagging was completed in late June, the site then went through an evaluation period which at time of writing is still ongoing.

We have received positive feedback for the quality of the electrical installation from both MMB and the end user NWG which is a credit to Dane Steel and his site team, they have all delivered a first class performance under sometimes unprecedented difficult conditions. A total number of 4750hrs were worked on site with no reported incidents or accidents, a great achievement. Another member of the Intelect team ‘the unsung hero’ is Jordan Whelpton - Jordan has had the unenviable task of keeping a commercial eye on the project, providing MMB quantity surveyors with monthly payment applications and the difficult task of answering many queried during the final audit sign off.

My personal thanks to Dane Steel, Andy Rudd, Jamie Colledge and Jordan Whelpton plus all others that have worked on this project.

Combined lifting frame and jig for a Lancaster bomber

Just Jane Lancaster Bomber

Just Jane Lancaster Bomber

The Lancaster bomber ‘Just Jane’ is based at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby. During the Summer months visitors can take a ‘taxi’ ride around the airfield in the bomber, however the end goal is to restore Just Jane to airworthy condition again.

They are now three years into a ten year restoration project to get a certificate of airworthiness from the Civil aviation authority, which will allow Just Jane to return to flight and become the only the third flying Lancaster in the world.

Part of this winter’s work is to remove the rear fuselage and thoroughly inspect the condition of all the ribs. It will soon be re-assembled to the rest of the aircraft for this summer’s taxy run season, then next winter it will be returned to the jig to have any corroded ribs replaced and all the aluminium skin replaced.

Intelect Engineering in Grimsby were asked to design and build a combined lifting frame and jig to lift the rear fuselage section off its temporary trolley and fix it in a position so it could be worked on safely. There are multiple support beams at each end to allow beams to be removed as required to allow access to all the fuselage and it still be supported. Any removed members must go back in exactly the same position.

Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage are hoping to be open this summer (COVID-19 permitting) to offer a 'tail down taxy ride' on the world famous Lancaster Bomber - the only place in Europe you can get on board the iconic aircraft!

Intelect were contracted by PPG to provide two 3D as-built models of Unit 1 and Unit 2.

The model was developed using point-cloud data captured via our Faro Focus 3D S70 Laser Scanner. Each unit of the factory was scanned over a period of four days including the external building which we provided the client with a hard copy of all scan data for future use.

The 3D models were then manipulated to provide 2D plans and elevations ensuring all new equipment and machinery fit within the working areas. We then introduced our pipework division to produce P&ID’s based on new layouts.

All machinery and equipment were provided via external customers, these included Dromont, Packland, Devree, Cimaco-solutions and more. This helped us achieve the best possible outcome to improve PPG’s current production rate.

Decommissioning & Relocation

Plant decommissioning and relocation

At Intelect, we are specialists in process plant decommissioning and relocation. Our plant relocation engineers are experts in their field, and will work with our clients around the clock to ensure the successful move of equipment, whether that be an individual machine, or a full factory relocation.

Our fully trained team of engineers, operators and support staff will work efficiently and safely ensuring production downtime is kept to a minimum. We provide in-depth planning prior to any project, and our innovative 3D surveying equipment provides fast and accurate measurements down to the millimetre, presenting you with a realistic and true to detail scan. From this single scan, we can develop an in-situ preview design of your site, which not only reduces health and safety risks, but also allows for clash detection, meaning we can spot potential problems before the process begins, saving valuable time and resources.

We are often asked by clients to refurbish existing equipment prior to relocation. Our specialised workshops span over 70,000 sq. ft of space, allowing our expert engineers to easily refurbish and maintain your equipment away from site, reducing the impact to your processes. Refurbishment also reduces the potential of any issues when it comes to the final installation, as all equipment is tested and inspected accordingly prior to leaving our site.
