John has spent hundreds of hours volunteering, training and providing medical cover at community supporting events.

During the coronavirus outbreak John with the support of Intelect has been taking time out to put extra volunteers in the front line with his SJA colleagues helping out communities.

How does it feel to volunteer with St John during the coronavirus outbreak?

I’m more than happy to assist, I want to be there on the giving support and hopefully making a difference. We are often asked, “Why are you doing this, your only volunteers?” Always my reply is, “It’s what we do”. I have the support of my family who worry just the same as everyone, but with the added worry of my direct contact outside the safety of our home.

How is St Johns Ambulance helping our communities during the coronavirus outbreak?

The COVID - 19 pandemic has brought St John Ambulance to the front-line. The help St John is giving the ambulance service means ambulances can be sent to patients more quickly. With COVID, things can deteriorate very quickly so it’s really important for us to take some of the burden from the NHS crews, who are already suffering from staff absences.

As trained emergency transport attendants, we where expected to put our training into practice, supporting NHS trusts by working side by side with the ambulance trusts. Up to date St John Ambulance has provided almost 17, 000 hours of crewed ambulances across the country, covering 999 calls and seeing people scared, emotional and shattered through loss.

What’s been the most rewarding part of the experience?

The normal day to day for a SJA volunteer, is covering community and sporting events, with the significance being that our trained team was there to help a casualty in their time of need. I have had the privilege to be part of such a team, that on two occasions it has made the difference between a life lost and a life saved. These are the circumstances we strive for and train to deliver.

How has your St John training prepared you for the fight against coronavirus?

I have volunteered for St John Ambulance for the past five years, gaining qualifications as a first aider through to my current role as an emergency transport attendant. The importance of continuous development is paramount keeping your clinical skills sharp and up-to date.

I am grateful for the support of my employers Intelect UK, who’s generosity shown to St John Ambulance, has helped the NHS to help all.

Please stay safe by following the guidelines and we will all get through this together.

Hightide corporate partners

Intelect and five other industry-leading Teesside businesses, have signed up as corporate partners to work with High Tide.

Founded in 2012, the Tees Valley charity, dedicated to offering young people valuable career experiences, has grown significantly over the last six years, creating a level of membership which offers considerable benefits both to the Foundation and businesses in the region.

Fran Cormican, Managing Director of Intelect, said: “We are thrilled to be entering 2019 as one of High Tide’s corporate partners. My fellow directors and I all started our careers as apprentices, and now apprenticeships are a major driving force in our business’ success.

“We couldn’t think of a better way to support the young people of our area, than to partner with a charity that promotes the same values when it comes to providing opportunities to the youth of Teesside.”

Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships

Since 1998, apprenticeships have been the building blocks of the Intelect workforce, and have continued to be for the past 20 years as we have grown and progressed as a business.

Award winning apprentices

We have built a strong working relationship with our training providers, including JTL Training, Middlesbrough College and The Northern Skills Group, all of whom have been a constant support network to us and our apprentices, enabling us to get the best from them as they progress throughout their courses and with their careers.

The last few years has seen increased growth with the number of apprentices we take on. On average Intelect employ around 20-25 apprentices at any one time, ranging from 1st year apprentices, to those studying degree level or higher education courses.

When it comes to apprenticeships, Intelect’s ethos has always been ‘train to retain’. With over 50% of the Intelect workforce having previously been an apprentice, or still completing an apprenticeship, this means we retain the specialised skills needed for the industries we operate in, allowing us to maintain the highest standards of practice.

When Intelect started their apprenticeship programme back in 1998, it began with just 2 electrical apprentices, one of whom is still with the company today as a qualified electrician.

As Intelect has grown, the range of apprenticeship disciplines we offer has widened, with us now utilising them in all aspects of our business, from Accounting to CAD Design, and Administration to Welding & Pipework.

Our commitment to our apprentices is stronger now than ever, and ultimately everyone wins because of it. Whether our apprentices chose to remain with Intelect, or move on with their career elsewhere, they will leave with first class training and experience, and the Intelect team will have also developed and grown thanks to their contribution.

Our Apprenticeships

Here at Intelect, we offer a wide range of apprenticeships at different educational levels, allowing us to help our apprentices reach their maximum potential.

The courses we offer:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Fabrication and Welding
  • Design
  • Administration
  • Accountancy
  • Pipefitting
  • Mechanical Fitting

Educational levels:

  • Level 2
  • Level 3
  • Level 4
  • HNC
  • HND
  • BEng Honours

Charlie Baker Apprentice Award

Charlie Baker Award

For the past 3 years, we have recognised the hard work and achievements of our apprentices through the Charlie Baker Apprentice of the Year Award, which is dedicated to a former employee, who sadly passed away in 2014.

Throughout his time with us, Charlie was a huge asset to the Intelect team, and often played a large part in the development of apprentices, taking many of them under his wing, which is why we decided to create and dedicate this award to him.

Winners of the Charlie Baker Apprentice Award

  • 2017/18 Apprentice of the Year: Marcus McMahon.
  • 2016/17 Apprentice of the Year: Tom Blakemore.
  • 2015/16 Apprentice of the Year: James Steel.

Teesside Business Shines The Light On Mental Health

This Mental Health Awareness Week, Teesside based Intelect, are taking the opportunity to raise awareness amongst its staff, contractors and suppliers, of its renewed commitment to improving mental health services across its business and in the wider construction community.

Intelect, a supporter of The Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, which provides financial and emotional support to the construction community and their families, will be organising a series of events, culminating in a ‘Lighthouse Day’ in September, where Intelect employees will be taking part in a Dragon Boat Race on the River Tees.

Nathan Jones, Group Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental Manager at Intelect said, “A big driver for the campaign is the fact that the leading cause of death for men aged 20-49 is suicide, and rates for any age group are among the highest in the construction industry, with an average of 2 construction workers taking their lives every day!

“I have worked in the construction industry for over 15 years, and I have seen first-hand how the pressure of dealing with mental health conditions can impact an employee. I have no doubt that the more we talk about mental health, the more we realise we are not alone and the better the outcomes become.”

Intelect’s support of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity helps to fund the charity’s helpline and mental health app. The free to access services provide a 24/7 safety net for all construction workers and their families, offering advice on welfare and mental wellbeing, emergency financial aid and support on legal, tax and debt management matters.

Intelect’s Director, John Thompson, said, “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by mental ill health, and will understand how important it is that help is available whenever and wherever someone needs it.

“As we enter Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to be backing the Lighthouse Club and its invaluable services, to let people know that potentially life-saving support is just a phone call away.”

Last year alone, the helpline supported 1,662 families in crisis and delivered nearly £1.5m in emergency financial aid.

Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity said, “On behalf of everyone at the charity, we would like to thank Intelect for helping us to spread the word about our 24/7 Construction Industry Helpline. With two construction workers taking their own life every single working day, it’s vital that no worker ever feels alone in a crisis.

“We provide both financial and emotional wellbeing support to everyone in the industry and their families and we can’t do that without the support of those companies within the industry, and those that support them.”

The 24/7 Construction Helpline can be reached by dialling 0345 605 1956.
