NWG Murton WTW Upgrade

Client: MM Bentley
Date: Aug ‘19 – Jun ’20
Discipline: Electrical Installation

Works included:

  • Installation of cable containment around the perimeter of the treatment hall building
  • High bay lighting.
  • Process plant and equipment installation of cabling and terminations.
  • Waste Water & Contact Tanks,
  • De-Chlorination System
  • External lighting.

In November 2017 Intelect UK Ltd were chosen by MM Bentley as a key electrical installation supplier for a proposed upgrade of an existing borehole water treatment plant at Murton Berwick Upon Tweed. A new water treatment works consisting of pressure filters and chemical dosing was to be constructed off line alongside the existing works and required to be operational by late 2020. Given the relatively short timeframe Intelect were invited to a ‘Design Sprint’ at the Seaham hub where other key suppliers worked collaboratively to formulate an outline design to which prices could be calculated formulating a target overall costs for the scheme. Over the following 14 months MMB designers in Cambridge produced an electrical installation scope and drawing package, this package was received by Intelect for final pricing and an NEC3 Option C design & construct contact was awarded a short time later.

Prior to commencement of site works detailed electrical termination and loop drawings were prepared by Jamie Colledge, these drawings were reviewed and signed off by the clients appointed electrical engineer Dave Bell. Dane Steel was handed the responsibility of supervising the site works and a small team of electricians were assigned to the project with Andy Rudd being in overall charge.

Site installation began in August 2019 with the first activity being the installation of cable containment around the perimeter of the treatment hall building and high bay lighting. Process plant and equipment soon followed opening the way for the installation of cabling and terminations. Before and after pictures of the first stage of works.

Work progressed through the remainder of the year within the treatment hall building and come the Christmas shutdown we were ready to move across to the adjacent High Lift Pumping Station. Between January and March the electrical work within the pumping station was completed enabling the MMB commissioning team to start their testing. It was towards the end of this period that the COVID-19 Pandemic arrived in the UK which had a dramatic effect on the day-to-day progress on not just this project but all other works within Intelect. After a temporary suspension of site works Dane and his team returned to site to see out the remainder of the internal installation works.

At the start of spring our attention turned to field equipment located external to the treatment hall and pumping station, these works included the Waste Water & Contact Tanks, De-Chlorination System and external lighting. Local containment and isolators were mounted then cables we installed through underground ducts, terminations were completed by late May leaving only the external lighting left to essentially complete our works. During the early part of this period we were still working under lockdown conditions but as restrictions started to ease the site team were again able to book into local overnight accommodation allowing for more efficient working and less miles on the road. External lighting and final snagging was completed in late June, the site then went through an evaluation period which at time of writing is still ongoing.

We have received positive feedback for the quality of the electrical installation from both MMB and the end user NWG which is a credit to Dane Steel and his site team, they have all delivered a first class performance under sometimes unprecedented difficult conditions. A total number of 4750hrs were worked on site with no reported incidents or accidents, a great achievement. Another member of the Intelect team ‘the unsung hero’ is Jordan Whelpton - Jordan has had the unenviable task of keeping a commercial eye on the project, providing MMB quantity surveyors with monthly payment applications and the difficult task of answering many queried during the final audit sign off.

My personal thanks to Dane Steel, Andy Rudd, Jamie Colledge and Jordan Whelpton plus all others that have worked on this project.

This revolutionary service can be utilised as a single service, or inclusive of Total Turn Key Solution. Not only does it minimise downtime and site disruption, but it also reduces Health and Safety Risks and allows for clash detection.

Production

Through the use of our latest surveying equipment, we are able to produce both 2D and 3D drawings of our client’s sites. With this, we can then produce walkthrough videos for presentations, in addition to in-situ preview designs, which allow you to see the design as it would appear on site once built. This not only improves quality control, but also allows mistakes to be spotted before the build process, saving valuable time and resources.

NWL Howdon Bio-Methane

NWL Howdon Bio-Methane

Case Study : NWL Howdon Bio-Methane

Following on from the success of the Bran Sands PTA Biogas Reuse Project in 2012 NWL once again chose to engage Interserve Construction Ltd as Main Contractor on the new Bio-Methane ‘Gas to Grid’ Project at Howdon.

The success of this project would be measured upon the ability to deliver the project on time, one budget and to the highest quality, As with Bran Sands, Interserve chose Intelect UK Ltd as their preferred electrical sub-contractor based upon our ability to deliver on these success factors.

Work commenced on the site in late July 2014, with the first tasks being the earthing of the formwork within the foundations of the Grid Entry Unit, Pre-Treatment Plant, Bio-Methane Upgrade Plant, Transformer Plinth and, as shown in the picture below the LV Switch Room plinth. Additionally as a part of a dedicated TNS Supply an Earth Rod Nest was installed adjacent to the LV Switch Room.

As well as heavy power distribution there was a significant amount of gas monitoring instrumentation installed, with a large proportion installed within Hazardous Areas. Intelect UK Ltd provide our Installation electricians with ‘CompEx’ training giving them the flexibility to work within many sectors of the production industry including, chemical and petro-chemical. The picture to the right shows one of these Hazardous Area installations, this one being a pressure transmitter and electric actuator at the Pre-Treatment Plant

The overall scale of the project can be seen from the picture to the left. In the foreground we can see the Pre-Treatment Plant with the gas export line disappearing uphill to the Grid Entry Unit. In the background we can see the Plant Rooms and Bio-Methane Process area with the Absorption, Desorption and Flash columns clad in scaffold. To the left are the Propane Storage Tanks with a steel protection cage fitted over

The project brought together contractors from across Europe, all with a common goal of delivering a ‘Gas to Grid’ deadline of the 30th November. The Interserve site project team led by Graeme Eagling kept the project on track and with excellent collaboration between all stakeholders the target date was achieved. We look forward to continuing our good relationships with both Northumbrian Water & Interserve Construction Ltd.
