Intelect commits to investing in the next generation by joining The 5% Club

Intelect, a national engineering company with bases in Middlesbrough, Grimsby and Leicester, has showcased its commitment to developing its people by joining The 5% Club, an industry led initiative focussed on driving momentum into the recruitment of apprentices, graduates and sponsored students.

The 5% Club, initiated in 2013, is a movement of more than 700 employers providing ‘earn and learn’ opportunities to develop the skills and talents people need to become more employable and create meaningful careers.

Companies joining The 5% Club commit to raising the number of apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formal programmes to 5% of their total workforce within five years. Existing members range from SMEs to FTSEs and cover a number of diverse industries, from engineering through to the legal sector.

After 24 years of supporting over 150 apprentices with their award-winning programme, Intelect continues to build on its commitments to the next generation by joining The 5% Club. The company is regularly commended for its efforts and dedication, and most recently, they ranked in the Apprenticeships Top 50 SMEs in England.

Director, and former apprentice, John Thompson said, “We are delighted to be joining the 700 plus employers who are already members of The 5% Club. As a former apprentice myself, I understand the value that apprenticeships and training opportunities bring to young people, and the companies they work for, so it’s vital that businesses continue to open doors for the next generation.”

They are also a finalist in the Apprenticeships, Training and Skills category at this years North East Business Awards, which take place in September this year.

Intelect continues with its award success, adding a further accolade to their tally after receiving the Silver Employer Recognition Award from the Armed Forces Covenant.

Created to ensure the Forces community are treated fairly and have equal opportunity, the Armed Forces Covenant is a promise by the nation to those who have served and their families.

The Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) acknowledges employers who have provided exceptional support to the armed forces community and defence by going above and beyond their covenant pledges.

Through a 3-tier approach of bronze, silver and gold awards, the scheme recognises the different levels of commitment provided by employers.
As a forces friendly employer, Intelect Director, John Thompson was delighted to receive the news about their silver award, he said, “We are very proud to have received the Silver Employer Recognition Award from the Armed Forces Covenant, building on our previous commitments.

“As a company we have supported the forces community for many years, and we will continue to provide opportunities and advocate to other businesses about the positive impact this can have.”

Brigadier Paul Baker, Chief Executive, North of England RFCA said, “There has always been great support for the Armed Forces within the North East of England but the growing number of companies prepared to publicly demonstrate this support is truly heartening, especially in such challenging times.

“These Employer Recognition Scheme awards are a recognition of the backing and encouragement provided to their employees who are also Reservists, Adult Volunteers within the Cadet Forces, Veterans and their families. Well done to all.”

The award follows not long after Intelect hosted the North East Armed Forces Business Forum, which saw over 20 regional business come together to discuss how they can better support those who serve, or have served, and their families.

Having signed the Covenant initially back in 2019, Intelect have continued to make steps to improve their support of the force’s community, building on their Bronze Employer Recognition Award which they received two years ago.

Going forward, Intelect plans to continue growing its support of the force’s community, and hopes to obtain the Gold Award in 2023.

The Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers list celebrates small to medium enterprises for their vital contribution and commitments to apprenticeships, with Intelect taking spot number 17.

Launched at the same time as the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers list, the two leader boards are designed to showcase the very best of England’s apprenticeship employers, with those listed recognised for providing some of the most successful apprenticeship programmes over the previous 12 months.

Apprenticeships have been at the heart of Intelect’s business model since 1997, just a year after their launch 25 years ago, and they have continued to grow their commitments ever since, training over 150 apprentices in that time and increasing the number of courses they offer.

Currently employing 33 apprentices across a range of disciplines, and with a retention rate of 54%, the Top 50 ranking comes only six days after their win at the Teesside North East Business Awards, where Intelect fought off tough competition to scoop the Apprenticeships, Training and Skills Award.

As a member of the Apprenticeship Ambassador Network, Alan Wallace, North East Network Coordinator was delighted to see Intelect representing the region and the network, saying “We want to congratulate Intelect on their recent award win and achieving 17th in the Top 50 SME Apprenticeship Employers list.

“This shows just how much Intelect values and supports apprenticeships as a recruitment method, as well as a learning and development route for their existing employees too, which is equally as important”.

Intelect works in close partnership with a number of local training and development providers to deliver their award-winning programmes. Principal of Hartlepool College of Further Education, Darren Hankey said, “We are delighted that Intelect has received so much recognition for its approach to apprenticeships. The company is known for its high standards and the recognition is richly deserved.

He continued, “Having high standards is also a part of our DNA at the College, where we’ve been supporting organisations since 1849. It is a privilege to work with Intelect and to be entrusted to train its fabrication, product design and environmental apprentices.”

Intelect Managing Director, and former apprentice, Fran Cormican was blown away with the recent news, saying “We are truly delighted to receive such fantastic recognition, and to be ranked 17th out of over 500 employers who entered is incredible. Apprenticeships are, and have always been, at the heart of Intelect and our ‘train to retain’ ethos has allowed us to grow and bring a wealth of innovation and diversity to our business for many years.

“That being said, we feel it’s hugely important that we, and other businesses alike, continue to advocate the benefits and opportunities that apprenticeships can provide, to ensure as many people as possible continue to have a pathway to succeed”.

Intelect will represent Teesside the Grand Final of the North East Business Awards on the 29th September at Hardwick Hall, where they will face Northumberland & Tyneside winners, Newcastle Building Society and Durham, Sunderland & South Tyneside winners, Unipres UK Ltd.

Intelect celebrates Women in Engineering Day by backing Power of Women campaign

As companies around the world celebrate International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), local mechanical and electrical engineering business, Intelect are transpiring their thoughts into action, by becoming a Corporate Supporter of the Power of Women campaign.

Celebrating its ninth year in 2022, INWED gives female engineers around the world a platform of visibility, and encourages young women and girls to take up engineering careers, something which Intelect are keen to champion.

According to the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), it’s reported that as of June 2021, only 16.5% of engineers are women, a figure which highlights the huge gender imbalance within the industry.

It’s these imbalances and inequalities that fuelled the fire of a group of local Tees Valley business leaders, spear headed by the late Professor Jane Turner OBE DL, to devise an action plan and create a campaign that improves the lives and aspirations of young women in the Tees Valley and beyond, leading to the launch of the Power of Women campaign in 2022.

Having worked in male dominated industries since the start of her career, Intelect’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Lily Brothwood is accustomed to challenging gender stereotypes, and was keen to continue doing so when she joined the company in December 2021.

Lily said, “When I joined Intelect, it was fantastic to see just how much work the company does to support young people, both inside and outside of the organisation, and in particular when it comes to advocating apprenticeships and career opportunities that are available within the engineering industry.

“That being said, it has always been frustrating to see the obvious lack of female presence within the sector, something which is highlighted further whenever we promote vacancies, which often leads too little to no women applying.

She continued, “To mark International Women in Engineering Day this year, we were delighted to become a Supporter of the Power of Women campaign to further cement our commitment when it comes to levelling up. It’s vital that young women and girls have visible role models within the industries that they aspire to work in, so that they can make their own choices, and choose their own path when it comes to their career.”

Power of Women chair Jane Armitage, who was Tees Businesswoman of the Year in 2020, said: “We’re thrilled that Intelect are backing the POW campaign to raise the aspirations and ambitions of our region’s girls and young women.

“There are significant challenges to be overcome but, with the support of companies such as Intelect, the Power of Women is beginning to make an impact, helping to create role models for the next generation to aspire to and emulate. You can’t believe what you can’t see. It is by seeing people in roles that girls will themselves believe they can aspire to and achieve, so it’s wonderful that Intelect are speaking out to mark International Women in Engineering Day too.”

Intelect’s Managing Director, Fran Cormican said, “Historically, the engineering industry has seen a huge underrepresentation of women. As businesses, it is so important that we come together to combat these imbalances by ensuring our sector is accessible to everyone and visible to future generations.

“We understand that there is still a long way to go when it comes to gender equality within the engineering industry, but by making these steps and working with the likes of the Power of Women campaign to combat stereotypes, we believe that we can continue to make a positive change for the future.”

Intelect were delighted to host the North East Armed Forces Business Forum for June, which saw over 20 regional businesses come together to discuss how they can better support those who serve, or have served, and their families.

All of the companies who attended the forum, held at Intelect’s three-acre site on Riverside Park, Middlesbrough, are also signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant, which aims to ensure that those who serve, or have served, and their families, are treated fairly and with respect in the communities, economy and society they serve.

As a Forces friendly employer, engineering company, Intelect received the Armed Forces Covenant Employer Recognition Scheme Bronze Award in 2021, and they are currently nominated for a Silver Award, which they hope to obtain in 2022.

The scheme highlights employers who pledge to support the Armed Forces community, including existing or prospective employees, something Intelect has done since the company was launched back in 1997.

Now, 25 years on, Intelect continues to support Veterans, Reservists and other members of the Armed Forces, including former Warrant Officer Class 2, and now QHSE Manager at Intelect, Mike Cook.

When asked why he felt it was important to support the Forces community, Mike said, “Our Armed Forces and Veterans make huge sacrifices and commitments, and I believe as a society and business community, it’s important we recognise the contributions they have made, and support them into civilian employment.

“Intelect continue to do this, and have been a great employer from this perspective, especially when it has come to helping me transition into the H&S industry and further my knowledge. They are also hugely supportive when it comes to providing opportunities to Veterans and Reservists, and continue to support the Armed Forces community through the likes of the Business Forum and Employee Recognition Schemes”.

Lieutenant Colonel Andy Black REME, Head of Engagement for North East and Yorkshire was present when Intelect signed the Armed Forces Covenant back in 2019, and was happy to be back for the Business Forum, saying, “It was a delight to visit Intelect, four years on from when they signed the Armed Forces Covenant. Hearing from their Director, John Thompson about the strides the organisation has made to support Service Leavers, Reservists and Armed Forces Charities is inspiring and I sense there's much more to come from Intelect.

He continued, “Teesside as a region is hugely supportive of the Armed Forces, many of those that serve in the Royal Navy, Army or Royal Air Force come from the region, and return to the region after their service with a tremendous skillset.  It is great to see employers in Teesside championing those that serve or have served."

Intelect Director, John Thompson said, “It’s fantastic to see that so many North East businesses are supportive of the Armed Forces community. We want to ensure that as a company we are providing as much support and opportunity as possible, especially when it comes to those looking to start a second career.

“There are so many transferable skills and qualities that former Forces personnel can bring to a business, and it’s really important that companies recognise this and provide opportunities of employment.”

The North East Armed Forces Business Forum (NE AFBF) is aimed at bringing together representatives from the Ministry of Defence and North East employers, to tackle challenges and explore opportunities. The events are delivered as information sharing sessions, acknowledging the excellent work that is taking place across the region. It also recognises that there are issues that still need to be addresses, some of which could benefit from business, University and MOD intervention. It is hoped that all invested parties will form a platform for collaborative solutions to support the Armed Forces Communities.

Intelect are delighted to announce a long-term framework with local utilities giant, Northumbrian Water, becoming a Direct Delivery Partner to assist their asset delivery team on both their waste water and clean water sites.

The framework, which covers the entire North East area and beyond, will see Intelect provide electrical and mechanical support on any new installations and existing asset refurbishments across Northumbrian Water’s operational sites.

Having worked with the company for over 20 years, Intelect have a longstanding relationship with Northumbrian Water and their Tier 1 suppliers, who include the likes of Mott MacDonald Bentley and Interserve.

The national framework, which commences this month, is the first of its kind to be awarded to Intelect, and comprises of a group of seven other companies, three of which are based in the North East.

Intelect are proud to be expanding on their already strong range of engineering capabilities, with the framework potentially allowing for further employee growth in the coming years.

Intelect’s Contracts Manager, Kevin Willis said, “We are thrilled to be expanding on our service offering for Northumbrian Water. I have worked with them personally for nearly 30 years, 20 of which have been with Intelect, so it’s great to continue such a positive relationship.

“As a North East based business, it’s great to see large local companies awarding long term frameworks to local businesses, and we look forward assisting Northumbrian Water over the coming years and beyond.”

As a Direct Delivery Partner of Northumbrian Water, Intelect will work collaboratively with the business to identify and deliver cost effective and efficient solutions to their customers.

Intelect cements apprenticeship commitments by joining National Apprenticeship Ambassador Network

Apprenticeships have been at the heart of Middlesbrough-based Intelect’s workforce since they launched their dedicated programme back in 1998, just one year after their incorporation.

Now, 24 years on, the engineering company has since trained over 100 apprentices in a variety of roles, and has further cemented its commitment to apprenticeships by becoming a member of the National Apprenticeship Ambassador Network.

The Apprenticeship Ambassador Network (AAN) is a group of employers whose main aim is to spearhead the drive to engage new employers to commit to apprenticeship delivery in England.

Intelect currently employs 33 apprentices at its Teesside site across a range of educational levels and courses, and their award-winning programme has been recognised by multiple awards on both local and national levels in recent years.

As part of their voluntary commitment to the ANN, Intelect will continue to build on their already strong engagement with key stakeholders including schools, colleges, fellow employers and wider supply chains.

Intelect’s Managing Director, Fran Cormican said, “We are delighted to be welcomed to the Apprenticeship Ambassador Network, and look forward to continuing to share our success stories and inspire others when it comes to employing apprentices.

“Apprentices have been the backbone of our work force for almost a quarter of a century, and have allowed us to grow and expand our businesses consistently, as well as provide a wider variety of capabilities to our market leading clients.

Members of the Network demonstrate their ambassadorial work primarily against four core activity areas which include sharing their positive experiences with apprenticeships, directing key partners and individuals to key information, celebrating their successes as employers and apprentices, and providing insight to the Government on apprenticeships.

How long have you worked for the company?

Can you give an overview of what your job entails on a daily basis?

I am mainly based in the Middlesbrough office; however, I look after the compliance for all three Intelect locations.

On a daily basis, I manage the companies IMS system (Integrated Management System), keep records of all the equipment that requires a LOLER certificate (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations), and oversee our internal welding procedures.

I am also responsible for keeping all of our accreditations up to date and carrying out internal audits on all of our departments and locations, and on occasion I am also required to attend site to carry out internal audits on any of our ongoing projects. My role also involves preparing for all of our external audits and ensuring we have everything that is required for such events.

Have you always been in this role at Intelect? If not, what did you do before that and why did you decide to change?

When I started at Intelect I was initially an Administrator. After a couple of years in this role, I eventually began to expand my responsibilities and naturally swayed towards more compliance focused tasks.

I decided to take on the role of Compliance Manager as I found it interesting and a new personal challenge.

Have Intelect supported you with any training or personal development?

I feel that Intelect have fully supported me with my training throughout my time in the company. When I was transferring roles, they supported me with the completion of my IOSH qualification, a two-day IMS Internal Auditor Course, and my Advanced Diploma in Environmental Management, which in turn led to me feeling more confident in my new role.

They also support all employees with additional online training courses that cover everything from mental health awareness to manual handling.

What is your favourite part of your job?

I really enjoy the friendly working environment at Intelect, and that everyday tasks are never the same.

Do you have any aspirations for the future?

I would like to take my career as far as possible within Compliance, and continue to expand on my training and knowledge.

This week, as well as Careers Week, we are also celebrating International Women’s Day, do you think that more needs to be done to support women into STEM industries?

YES – I definitely think women need to be supported more within industry, as I still feel women are often overlooked when it comes to the opportunities available, and it should be an equal playing field for everyone. There needs to be more promotion and education around accessing careers in STEM industries, as I would have been interested in starting my current role much earlier if I knew what opportunities were on my doorstep and accessible.

Finally, what careers advice would you give for someone interested in a role similar to yours?

Take every opportunity that you can, as it can only lead to a better future.

Charlie Baker Award

Intelect holds annual awards ceremony in memory of former employee, Charlie Baker.

To mark National Apprenticeship Week, Intelect were proud to celebrate the event by hosting their own internal apprenticeship awards ceremony in memory of former employee, Charlie Baker.

The internal award, which was launched back in 2015, was created to recognise the hard work and achievements of their apprentices, and is fittingly named the ‘Charlie Baker Apprentice of the Year Award’, dedicated to the former employee who sadly passed away in 2014.

Throughout his time at Intelect, Charlie was a huge asset to the team, and often played a large part in the development of apprentices, taking many of them under his wing.

This year, Business Administration Apprentice, Ella Tebble won the coveted award, which was presented to her by Charlie’s wife, Janet and his son, Beau.

Ella is the first female to win the award and was delighted to have received it, saying, “Being awarded the Charlie Baker Apprentice of the Year award, has made me feel so much more confident in what I do and it’s shown me that people do believe in me.

“After leaving school, I was worried about how I would fit in to a working environment and the challenges and responsibilities I would face, but I can now say that I feel I have grown as a person thanks to the help of my team who have encouraged me every step of the way.

She continued, “they have taken me out of my comfort zone and have thrown me into situations which have allowed me to prove to myself that I am capable of achieving my goals, and they have actively taken the time to train me, which I am grateful for. I now look forward to finishing my apprenticeship and seeing what my future holds within the company”.

Alongside Ella, there were also two highly-commended awards presented at the event. Jordan Whelpton, Accounts Apprentice, and Callum Dale, Electrical Apprentice, also received an award for their hard work and efforts throughout the year.

Intelect Managing Director, Fran Cormican said, “It’s fantastic that we are able to welcome back Janet and her family to present the award again this year. Due to Covid, over the last couple of years we haven’t been able to host the awards in their usual fashion, but it’s great to be able to once again celebrate our apprentices, and Charlie’s memory, especially with it being National Apprenticeship Week”.

Name and apprenticeship

Ella Tebble – Level 3 Business Admin

What did you aspire to be when you were younger?

When I was younger, I always wanted to be a Beauty Therapist as I enjoy meeting new people and making them feel better about themselves.

Can you tell us a bit about your apprenticeship and what you do on a day-to-day basis?

On a day-to-day basis I answer the phones, manage relationships with subcontractors and suppliers, keep employee holidays and other databases up to date, and fulfil reception duties. I also book employee training courses and manage funding applications among other tasks.

How is your time split between hands on learning and theory/college?

I attend Middlesbrough College for 3.5 hours a week and the remaining 36.5 hours is hands on learning at the Intelect offices in Middlesbrough.

What do you like most about your apprenticeship?

I like that I am able to learn in a working environment, gain practical experience and I am also able to get support from my peers and mentors.

What’s been your biggest challenge so far in your apprenticeship?

My biggest challenge so far was stepping up from the school environment into a business working environment. After spending 5 years in secondary school with the comfort of my friends and other familiarities, I found it daunting coming into a new working environment and with new faces, but the team were really welcoming and I settled in quickly.

What advice would you give to other young people who were thinking about doing an apprenticeship?

I like the fact that I am gaining valuable work experience whilst obtaining a qualification. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship to other people.

Do you have any future career aspirations for when you’ve completed your apprenticeship?

Being awarded the Charlie Baker Apprentice of the Year award, has made me feel much more confident in what I do and it’s shown me that people do believe in me.

After leaving school, I was worried about how I would fit in to a working environment and the challenges and responsibilities I would face, but I can now say that I feel I have grown as a person thanks to the help of my team who have encouraged me every step of the way.

They have taken me out of my comfort zone and have thrown me into situations which have allowed me to prove to myself that I am capable of achieving my goals. They have actively encouraged me, and took the time to train me, which I am grateful for, and I now look forward to finishing my apprenticeship and seeing what my future holds within the company.
