John has spent hundreds of hours volunteering, training and providing medical cover at community supporting events.

During the coronavirus outbreak John with the support of Intelect has been taking time out to put extra volunteers in the front line with his SJA colleagues helping out communities.

How does it feel to volunteer with St John during the coronavirus outbreak?

I’m more than happy to assist, I want to be there on the giving support and hopefully making a difference. We are often asked, “Why are you doing this, your only volunteers?” Always my reply is, “It’s what we do”. I have the support of my family who worry just the same as everyone, but with the added worry of my direct contact outside the safety of our home.

How is St Johns Ambulance helping our communities during the coronavirus outbreak?

The COVID - 19 pandemic has brought St John Ambulance to the front-line. The help St John is giving the ambulance service means ambulances can be sent to patients more quickly. With COVID, things can deteriorate very quickly so it’s really important for us to take some of the burden from the NHS crews, who are already suffering from staff absences.

As trained emergency transport attendants, we where expected to put our training into practice, supporting NHS trusts by working side by side with the ambulance trusts. Up to date St John Ambulance has provided almost 17, 000 hours of crewed ambulances across the country, covering 999 calls and seeing people scared, emotional and shattered through loss.

What’s been the most rewarding part of the experience?

The normal day to day for a SJA volunteer, is covering community and sporting events, with the significance being that our trained team was there to help a casualty in their time of need. I have had the privilege to be part of such a team, that on two occasions it has made the difference between a life lost and a life saved. These are the circumstances we strive for and train to deliver.

How has your St John training prepared you for the fight against coronavirus?

I have volunteered for St John Ambulance for the past five years, gaining qualifications as a first aider through to my current role as an emergency transport attendant. The importance of continuous development is paramount keeping your clinical skills sharp and up-to date.

I am grateful for the support of my employers Intelect UK, who’s generosity shown to St John Ambulance, has helped the NHS to help all.

Please stay safe by following the guidelines and we will all get through this together.

Intelect win Gold Rospa Award for safety

Intelect is celebrating after landing an internationally-recognised award for demonstrating high health and safety standards.

Intelect has received a RoSPA Gold Health and Safety Award for working hard to ensure its staff get home safely to their families at the end of every working day.

Organisations receiving a RoSPA Award are recognised as being world-leaders in health and safety practice. Every year, nearly 2,000 entrants vie to achieve the highest possible accolade in what is the UK’s longest-running H&S industry awards.

Nathan Jones, QHSE Manager, said: “I'm really proud of the team at Intelect, who's hard work has paid dividends this year, seeing us progress from a Silver to the Gold Award!”

Julia Small, RoSPA’s head of qualifications, awards and events, said: “The RoSPA Awards scheme is the longest-running of its kind in the UK, but it receives entries from organisations around the world, making it one of the most sought-after global accolades in health and safety.

“RoSPA wants every employee, wherever they are, to work safe in the knowledge that they will be going home unharmed and healthy at the end of every day. The RoSPA Award winners are vital to help achieve this goal, as by entering they are driving up standards and setting new benchmarks for organisations everywhere. Currently, around 7million people are directly impacted by the RoSPA Awards, but the scheme’s influence is even wider.”

The majority of awards are non-competitive and mark achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Gold medals, president’s awards, orders of distinction and the Patron’s Award are presented to organisations sustaining the high standards of the gold level over consecutive years.

Competitive awards go to the best entries in 24 industry sectors including construction, healthcare, transport and logistics, engineering, manufacturing and education.

There are specialist awards for health at work, environmental management, safety delivered outside of the workplace, and fleet safety, and excellence trophies for the best international organisation, new entry, workforce involvement, leisure organisation, and organisation operating or based in Scotland. RoSPA’s top accolade is the Sir George Earle Trophy.

Intelect receives International Safety Award

All four Intelect businesses have been awarded International Safety Award with a Merit from the British Safety Council.

Now in their 62nd year, the International Safety Awards recognise and celebrate organisations from around the world which have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the scheme’s independent judges their commitment to preventing workplace injuries and work-related ill health during the previous calendar year. The awards also recognise organisations that have shown commitment to well-being and mental health at work.

Since its foundation in 1957, the British Safety Council has campaigned tirelessly to protect workers from accidents, hazards and unsafe conditions, and played a decisive role in the political process that has led to the adoption of landmark safety legislation in the UK. Its members in more than 60 countries are committed to protecting and improving the well-being of workers, believing that a healthy and safe work environment is also good for business.

Nathan Jones, QHSE Manager of Intelect, commented: “We are very proud of this year’s bids the scores have been significantly improved and reflect the investment of the past year."

This year also sees one of the Intelect team, Charlie Schumm, nominated for Young Health and Safety Champion of the Year’ award, results of which follow later this month.

Mike Robinson, Chief Executive of the British Safety Council, congratulated Intelect on their success in winning an International Safety Award 2020 with a Pass: “The British Safety Council commends Intelect on their achievement. The award is in recognition of their commitment and efforts to keep their employees and workplaces free of injury and ill health.

“The vision of the British Safety Council is that no-one should be injured or made ill through work – anywhere in the world. Realising it requires more than legislation; people committed to health and safety, and increasingly also to workplace wellbeing, make it a reality and inspire others to create workplaces that are a key force for good.

“The long list of winners of the International Safety Awards, demonstrates that an increasing number of companies recognise that sensible and proportionate management of health and safety risks is a business enabler, benefiting employees, organisations and society as a whole. By celebrating the achievements of the 509 winners of the 2020 International Safety Awards and 62 years of improving health and safety standards around the world, we encourage other organisations to follow their lead and place employees’ health and safety at the heart of their business.”
“Our warmest congratulations to Intelect. All of those working at Intelect should be rightly proud of their achievement.”

North East Business Awards 2019

Overall winner of the ‘Apprenticeship Award’

Intelect were celebrating last month, after triumphing at the Grand Final of the North East Business Awards 2019, being crowned overall winner of the ‘Apprenticeship Award’.

The event took place at Hardwick Hall Hotel, near Sedgefield, and saw over 600 members of the regions business community gathered together to celebrate a successful year of business in the North East.

The night was a culmination of three regional heats, which took place in the months leading up to the event, where the winner of each of the three heats was sent through to the final.

Intelect were one of only two Teesside businesses to be crowned winners on the night, with fellow Middlesbrough based business, UK Pods taking home two trophies, ‘Newcomer of the Year’, and the ‘Services Award’.

Judges from the CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personal Development) were impressed with Intelect, when they heard how much time and investment they had committed to apprentices over the last 20 years.

Intelect triumphed the likes of well-known companies, Hays Travel and EGGER Ltd, both of whom have exceptional apprenticeship programmes.

Managing Director, Fran Cormican and Director, John Thompson were there to accept the award on the evening, and were thrilled to be recognised for their dedication to apprenticeships.

After accepting the award, Fran Cormican said, “Apprenticeships have been at the heart of our business since 1997, and continue to be to this day.

“Our ethos, ‘train to retain’ has allowed us to effectively grow our own workforce over the past 20 years, and our apprentices have brought a wealth of diversity and innovation to our business” he continued.

Other winners on the night included, Beamish, Living Museum of the North, The Wheel Company and Tharsus Group, who were crowned Company of the Year.

KP Snacks and Intelect team up to support three local charities

On Saturday 22nd June, two Teesside businesses went head to head in a Charity Football Match, to support three charities from around the region. Middlesbrough based engineering company, Intelect and well-known crisp maker, KP Snacks, based in Billingham, organised the family fun day to raise money for Bloodrun EVS, Great North Air Ambulance and Zoe’s Place.

The event was held at Norton Football Club, and had activities suitable for the whole family, there was even a special visit from the KP Snacks Pom Bear!

Throughout the course of the day, over 200 supporters attended to cheer on the teams, with Intelect crowned victorious after a 2-1 win over the KP Snacks side.

After working together for over 20 years, the two companies decided to join together outside of the working world to raise vital funds for their chosen charities, all of whom rely heavily on donations and volunteers to operate their invaluable services.

Later that week, the KP Snacks Pom Bear made a second appearance, hand delivering three cheques with a total of £900 to the selected charities.

John Jobling, a representative from Bloodrun EVS, attended the event, and accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity, he said, “This generous donation will help us to reach the amount needed for us to replace one of our oldest bikes, a Honda Deauville, which is 18 years old.

“The new motorcycle will mean that volunteers can continue to ride safely and with confidence, when travelling between North East NHS Hospitals and Trusts, transporting blood.”

Captain of the Intelect team, and instigator behind the fundraiser, Jordan Garbutt said, “It’s so important that we keep providing support to the local charities in our area, you never know when you might need their help, so we’ve got to ensure they continue to receive the valuable funding they require.”

Following the success of the event, both teams are already planning a rematch for next year, and are hoping to make it an annual occurrence, so that they can continue to provide support to local charities.
